A NEW TO WHO CHRISTMAS SPECIAL: HO HO HUM! (OUR CRAP FAVOURITES)

New to Who bring you gifts you probably didn’t really want this Christmas, and that you will only end up throwing out along with the wrapping on Boxing Day. Merry Crapmas - it’s our Ho Ho Hum special!

Because it’s been that kind of year, Col, Dan, and Steven have taken to looking for the good in the Doctor Who stories that perhaps aren’t as loved by many as they are loved by them.

Is there even one McCoy story that Dan can’t watch in rapt attention? (Clearly not!) Hear Steven ‘fess up to loving a Hinchcliffe and Holmes clunker that will have you shaking your head. And which piece of failed ‘60s avant garde surrealism is Col’s dirty little secret?

It’s probably not the Christmas you were hoping for, but we’ve all got to band together and try to find something worth smiling about. We hope you like at least some of our rubbish faves. Merry Crapmas, Sweet Dorks!

Off a remote rocky island a few miles off the Channel coast stands the New To Who lighthouses. NEW TO WHO and THE SPEARHEAD FROM SPACE

In this, their twenty-third incarnation, NEW TO WHO and Returning Friend of the Podcast, Pete, grapple with the nightmarish invasion of the AUTONS - living giant-sized plastic-modelled ‘humans’ with no hair and sightless eyes; waxwork replicas and tailors’ dummies whose murderous behaviour is directed by the NESTENE CONSCIOUSNESS - a malignant, squid-like monster of cosmic proportions and indescribably hideous appearance.

‘This NEW TO WHO adventure (televised as “Spearhead from Space”) wins my vote as the best in the lifetime of the series so far.”

NEW TO WHO and THE TV MOVIE

“We’re back - and it’s about time!”

Late July, 2019: the brink of a new episode of New To Who. An anachronistic Australian podcast materialises in San Francisco (or is that Vancouver?) amid a hail of laughter which finds its intentional targets - three strange men who walk out of the pod.

But Col, Dan, and Steven are not the only podcasters in Vancouver. Doctor Who royalty, Jeremy Radick - who appears as Gareth in the 1996 TV Movie - is there as well, joining New To Who for a very special episode.

Seven years after disappearing from television screens everywhere, Doctor Who came back - but for one night only.

The script for The TV Movie (also unofficially known as “The Enemy Within”) was written by Matthew Jacobs - whose father appeared in the William Hartnell story, The Gunfighters - while Philip Segal was finally able to bring his vision for Doctor Who to a US mainstream audience for the first time in his role as Executive Producer of this American co-production with Fox. Geoffrey Sax, another Englishman in Hollywood, directs this big budget movie intended as a pilot for a Doctor Who series on network television.

Taking the mantle of the Doctor, this time in his eighth incarnation, was the dreamy Paul McGann. Daphne Ashbrook played his companion-in-waiting, Dr Grace Holloway, alongside Jee Yee Tso as Chang Lee, who falls under the spell of the Master - this time played fabulously by Eric Roberts.

You can listen to and see the film clip for The Safety Dance by Canadian new wave outfit Men Without Hats here.

NEW TO WHO and THE ARK IN SPACE

At a time in the far-off future, Earth has become uninhabitable.  A selection of Humanity is placed, deep-frozen, in a fully-automated space station, to await the day of their return to Earth…

Thousands of years later, New To Who return.  Col, Dan, and Steven find things going suspiciously wrong, and the station under attack from the giant WIRRN, deadly creatures who, in their lust for power, now threaten the future of the whole Human Race…

New To Who are back with a look at THE ARK IN SPACE, the first story proper of the vaunted Hinchcliffe and Holmes era of Classic Who (Seasons 12 to 14).

The story is written by Robert Holmes, rewriting John Lucarotti’s original script, while Philip Hinchcliffe takes the reins from Barry Letts as producer for the first time – at the ripe old age of 29!  It boasts some beautiful set designs by Roger Murray-Leach complemented by gorgeous direction by Rodney Bennett and a haunting score from Australia’s own Dudley Simpson, while Tom Baker, Elisabeth Sladen, and Ian Marter are wonderful as one of the all-time very best TARDIS teams.

With echoes of 2001: A Space Odyssey by Stanley Kubrick from 1968 and foreshadowing Ridley Scott’s Alien of 1979, THE ARK IN SPACE combines existential and body horror genres to tell the story of cryogenically frozen human colony that revives only to find themselves in the midst of an insectoid alien horror that feeds on their bodies and souls!

The cover of the original imprint of the 1976 Target novelisation for THE ARK IN SPACE is used with the kind permission of Chris Achilleos.  The novelisation is written by Ian Marter himself, and the audiobook is ready by none other than Tom Baker.

New To Who: Interview with Christopher H Bidmead

NEW TO WHO meet CHRISTOPHER H BIDMEAD

It is with great pleasure that we give Our #SweetDorks an interview with the Script Editor of Doctor Who during the Season 18 and writer of Logopolis, Christopher H Bidmead.

Dan, Steven, and Col are joined by Christopher, who relates the story of how he became a writer, actor, and script editor of Doctor Who.

Over the course of our chat, we hear Christopher talk about what it was like to inherit the show from his predecessor, Douglas Adams, what it was like to work with Tom Baker, and what parts John Nathan-Turner and Barry Letts played in the shaping of the vision of Season 18, the last of the Fourth Doctor and the first of the 1980s.

Great thanks go to Christopher H Bidmead for appearing on New To Who!

NEW TO WHO - LOGOPOLIS

In theory Dan and Steven should be able to change †heir appearance to blend in unobtrusively wherever they happen to materialise. In practice, however, because of a fault in the chameleon circuit, they always look like a police box - a minor inconvenience the they now hope to correct.

Fixing the mechanism involves a visit to Perth and a trip to the planet Logopolis - normally a quiet little place that keeps itself to itself.

But on this occasion the meddling presence of Col ensures the disruption of normality. And even Col is horrified by the threat of total chaos he unintentionally precipitates - until he finds a way to turn the imminent destruction of the universe to his own advantage...

New to Who concludes its trilogy of regeneration stories with this, the final story of the Fourth Doctor as played by the inimitable Tom Baker. It is also the introductory story featuring the first Australian companion, Tegan Jovanka played by the lovely Janet Fielding, who joins existing companion Adric (Matthew Waterhouse) and Nyssa (Sarah Sutton) who rejoins the cast in what will become known as the ‘crowded TARDIS’ in the following season.

LOGOPOLIS was written by the Season 18 script editor, Christopher H Bidmead, and is beautifully directed by the late, great Peter Grimwade, his second story as director for the programme. Peter Grimwade would go on to write three Fifth Doctor stories.

The cover of the original imprint of the 1982 Target novelisation for LOGOPOLIS is by Andrew Skilleter. The novelisation is written by Christopher H Bidmead, who also reads the audiobook, which is available from Audible.

Episode 18 - The Caves of Androzani

NEW TO WHO AND THE CAVES OF ANDROZANI

From the moment they land on the planet Androzani Minor, everything goes wrong for Dan and Steven and their young companion, Bridget.

They become involved in the struggle between brutal gun-runners, ruthless Federation troops, and the hideously mutilated Sharaz Jek, who lurks in the depths of the caves with his android army.

Key to this struggle is spectrox, the most valuable substance in the universe. Suitably processed, spectrox is an elixir of life, but it in its raw state it is a deadly poison - a fact which will cost the Doctor another of his Time Lord lives…

New to Who continues with its trilogy of regeneration stories with this, the final story of the Fifth Doctor - and Our Steven’s favourite as a kid - the wonderful Peter Davison. It is also the second story featuring the first ‘American’ companion, Perpugilliam Brown - or Peri for short - played by the charming Nicola Bryant.

Widely regarded as a true classic of the entire series, THE CAVES OF ANDROZANI topped the 2014 Doctor Who Magazine Mighty 200 poll. It was written by the late, great Robert Holmes, and is impressively directed by Graeme Harper, his first story as director. Harper remains the only director to have worked on both Classic and New Who.

The cover of the original imprint of the 1985 Target novelisation for THE CAVES OF ANDROZANI is by Andrew Skilleter. The novelisation is written by Sir Terrance Dicks. The audiobook is read by the Doctor himself, Peter Davison.

NEW TO WHO AND THE TENTH PLANET

Dave Kitchen from The Doctor Who Show blinked again. Lights were moving towards him through the murk of the blizzard. Even as he looked, the lights changed into figures clad in silver-armoured suits, advancing across the ice with a slow deliberate step. Horror-struck, Dave reached for his microphone. BUT THEY CONTINUED MARCHING...

Dan and Steven have arrived in Sydney. The discussion of a story of firsts by this invincible, fearless podcast has begun-and the last thrilling adventure of the first DOCTOR WHO.

New to Who begins a trilogy of regeneration stories with this, the final story of the first Doctor - the original, you might say - the late, great William Hartnell. And who better to join us in discussing this wonderful pioneer than perhaps his biggest fan, Dave Kitchen from The Doctor Who Show?

Although being the last story for the First Doctor, THE TENTH PLANET is also a story of many firsts; the first regeneration story, the first Cybermen story, and the first story of a narrative format that would come to define the show: The Base Under Siege.

The cover of the original imprint of the 1976 Target novelisation for THE TENTH PLANET is used with the kind permission of Chris Achilleos. The novelisation is written by Gerry Davis. The audiobook is read by Anneke Wills.

NEW TO WHO AND THE GENESIS OF THE DALEKS

The Place: Scotland

Time: The day Verity!’s Liz Miles joined New To Who

After over fifty years of futile discussion between fans, Steven thinks this is the perfected form that carries Doctor Who into eternity - the dreaded GENESIS OF THE DALEKS. Without feeling, conscience or pity, Steven is joined as ever by Dan and this time by the wonderful Liz Myles to travel back through time in an effort to totally deconstruct this terrible menace of the future.

From Tom Baker’s first season as the Doctor, GENESIS OF THE DALEKS is rightly lauded as one of the very best Doctor Who stories ever made.

Combining the great powers of script editor Robert Holmes, producer Philip Hinchcliffe, director David Maloney, and a script by inventor of the Daleks, Davros - err, Terry Nation, we also have one of the great TARDIS teams of all time in the form of travelling companions Sarah-Jane Smith and Harry Sullivan, played resplendently by the late and wonderful Elizabeth Sladen and Ian Marter.

Fusing the still-heard echoes of World War II with aspects of moral philosophy and growing fears about scientific discoveries about the human genome, Genesis is a story of its time that remains as relevant today as it ever was.

The cover of the original imprint of the 1976 Target novelisation for GENESIS OF THE DALEKS is used with the kind permission of Chris Achilleos. The novelisation is written by Sir Terrance Dicks. The audiobook is read by Tom Baker.

Episode 15 - Ghost Light

NEW TO WHO GHOST LIGHT

Perth, 2018

In the sleepy, rural parish of Perth, New To Who is by far the most imposing edifice. The villagers shun the grim pod, but the owners, the reclusive and controversial Dan and Steven, receive occasional visitors.

The Reverend Nathan Bottomley and James Sellwood (of the Flight Through Entirety podcast), have travelled from Sydney to refute Dan and Steven's blasphemous theories of Doctor Who.

The very last story filmed and the third to last story screened of Classic Doctor Who, GHOST LIGHT presents a dark, twisted version of Victoriana that - when scratched - reveals something nasty (and supremely intelligent) beneath.

Sylvester McCoy's performance as the Seventh Doctor matures into a more Machiavellian figure, seemingly manipulating not just events but also his companion, Ace, played by the wonderful Sophie Aldred.

Again drawing on a number of literary and cultural influences, lifelong fan Marc Platt turns in a stupendously funny, macabre, and smart script that the production team then realised into perhaps the greatest 'oddball' story of the entire era.

The cover of the original imprint of the 1990 Target novelisation for GHOST LIGHT is used with the kind permission of Alister Pearson. The novelisation is written by Marc Platt, based on his original 1989 script. The audiobook is read by Ian Hogg, who played the sinister Josiah Smith in the televised serial.

NEW TO WHO - VENGEANCE ON VAROS

Dan and Steven have stalled in Sydney, and it is only on the planet Varos that they can find his precious Zeiton-7 ore they need to continue their podcasting through time and space.

Arriving on the planet, Dan and Steven meet the rebel Todd Beilby and incur the wrath of Richard Stone, representatives of the most excellent Doctor Who podcast, Flight Through Entirety.

The hunt is on for these rebel friends. And as they are pursued through the corridors of the deadly Punishment Dome, Dan, Steven, Richard and Todd discover that the people of Varos have some very disturbing ideas of entertainment ...

The second story of the troubled Season 22, VENGEANCE ON VAROS is arguably the most indicative story of the Colin Baker entire era.  It's a dark story with strong dystopian overtones echoic of George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four.  It is famous or introducing one of the most memorable monsters of the decade in Sil, played so wonderfully by Nabil Shaban.

Join Dan and Steven and special guests Todd and Richard from our favourite Doctor Who podcast, Flight Through Entirety, for a story that underscores some of the best of Colin Baker as the Doctor, and the wonderful Nicola Bryant in her only full season as Peri Brown.

Then JR Southall arrives - and the mysterious deaths begin. First a suspect, then a hunted victim, JR must find the hidden killer - or join the other victims of The Robots of Death.

The penultimate story of the acclaimed Season 14, this is perhaps the strongest four-parter of the entire Hinchcliffe and Holmes era having placed at number 11 in the DWM 2014 readers' poll.  It's a fast-paced story with an overriding Art Decor aesthetic, and an incredible array of classic series imagery including the eponymous Robots of Death in red-eyed killer mode (doing it thirty years before the Ood!).

Join Dan and Steven and special guest JR Southall for a story that showcases an imperious Tom Baker as the Doctor, and the wonderful Louise Jameson in only her second story as Leela of the Sevateem.  You can hear more of JR on the Blue Box Podcast, which you can find on Facebook here, while JR is also on Twitter here.
